On April 18, 2011, the two teenagers, Sudipta Roy Chowdhury and Rahul Mondal alias Bittu, went missing from the Behala area in Kolkata. A few days later, their families reportedly received ransom calls.

While the West Bengal Police initially investigated the case before handing it over to the state CID, investigators failed to trace the youths over the next 15 years, leading the police to close the case in 2020.

The high court on October 6 ordered CBI to take over the investigation on petitions filed by their families in 2011.

CBI officials said the agency will collect all case files and records from the West Bengal Police and record fresh statements from the family members of both Chowdhury and Mondal.
