Floods claim nine lives in Northeast, affect nearly four lakh

According to the Assam state disaster management authority, seven districts — Hojai, Karbi Anglong East, Karbi Anglong West, Golaghat, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar — have been affected.
Dhansiri, Barak, Katakhat and Kushiyara rivers in the state are flowing above the danger level at five places. Floods claimed one life in Golaghat. At least 1.66 lakh residents from 370 villages have been affected and flood waters have damaged 1,367 hectares of crops.
Nearly 36,000 displaced people are residing in 116 relief camps.
The flood situation in Manipur continued to remain grim as many houses in five valley districts are under water despite receding flood waters following the repairing a breached river embankment on Thursday.
The flood claimed five lives, including a 7-year-old boy.
Meanwhile, all government offices and educational institutions in valley districts, except 11 government departments, including four essential services, which remained to shut for the second day on Thursday on account of flood, will remained closed for another day.
The disaster response force, state police, paramilitary forces and local volunteers have taken up relief and rescue operations and are helping flood-affected families taking shelter at more than 50 relief camps in five valley districts.
According to reports, steps are on to clear the landslide on Imphal-Jiribam highway to make way for 400 stranded goods trucks. Reports from the directorate of relief and disaster management on Thursday said that as many as 1.7 lakh people and 101 villages have been affected in the ongoing flood.
In Tripura, three flood-related deaths have been reported. The body of one victim was recovered at Khowai district on Thursday. Nearly 25,805 people from 6,693 families are sheltered at 189 camps and an estimated 1,515 hectares of crop land was affected.
