A court in Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti on Wednesday sentenced Mohammad Faizal, the Nationalist Congress Party lawmaker representing the Union Territory in Parliament since 2014, to 10-year rigorous in a 2009 attempt to murder case.

The court suspended the bail of Faizal and three others after convicting four of the 23 accused in the case.Faizal was convicted of attacking his relative Mohammad Salih.
The prosecution said that Faizal led a group of people, who attacked Salih and critically injured him following an argument over the construction of a shed. Salih was flown to Kerala, where he was hospitalised for months.
