Police arrested Kalua from the Aurangabad area of district Bulandshahar on Monday night. Syana circle officer Raghvendra Kumar Mishra said he will be presented in court on Tuesday.

The accused was identified by scanning videos of the mob violence and subsequently recreating the crime scene. Prashant Natt, accused of the shooting dead inspector Singh, named the persons who had cornered the policeman and attacked him with stones and an axe before Natt fired at him, police said. Natt, a taxi driver, was on December 27 arrested from Noida.

Police said Natt had confessed to shooting the inspector with the policeman’s own weapon in a fit of rage.

Kalua was part of the group that was cutting a roadside tree to block the road in order to protest against the alleged cow slaughter that subsequently left inspector Singh and another village youth, Sumit Kumar, dead.

“Inspector Subodh Singh reached the spot with police force and tried to pacify the mob. A villager, identified as Kalua of village Chingrawathi, attacked the inspector with an axe in a fit of rage and chopped off his thumb. The injured inspector snatched the rifle of a policeman and tried to disperse the violent mob but he was attacked again with an axe, injuring his skull,” senior superintendent of police, Bulandshahr, Prabhakar Chaudhary had said
