Kausar Ali, a medical student arrested for uploading nude photographs of his estranged fiance on social media, was remanded in police custody by the Suri court in Bengal’s Birbhum district on Sunday.

The victim, a resident of Fakir Para area in Suri town, about 200 km from Kolkata, lodged complaint with the local police on Friday.

She alleged that Ali, a resident of the same neighbourhood, had been repeatedly posting her photographs on social media ever since he started avoiding her. The photos were taken when the two were into a relationship.

The victim alleged that Ali started avoiding her soon after her family talked of getting the two married.

Since Ali is a student of a medical college in Bhubaneswar the Suri police alerted several police stations. He was arrested from Burdwan town in East Burdwan district on Saturday night.

“Ali has been remanded in police custody. The cyber crime branch is investigating the matter,” said Ranjit Ganguly, the government pleader.

The woman, who is in her early twenties, said, “Ali took some photographs a few months ago. I was shocked to see these photos on his social media page. I pleaded with him but he kept posting.”

“He said he would never leave me and made me pose in the nude. I trusted him. I never imagined that he could make those photos public,” she added.

“We had seen them together many times and Kausar was known to be good student. How can a person who is supposed to be saving lives in future have such a distorted mindset?” wondered Sayed Nayeem, a resident of Fakir Para.
