Residents near Uttarakhand's Kali River alerted as water accumulates in Nepal's Chameliya River

The Pithoragarh district administration has alerted residents near the Kali River in the Jhulaghat area to avoid approaching the riverbank, following reports of water accumulating in Nepal's Chameliya River due to a landslide, an official said on Saturday.

Pithoragarh District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar said the alert was issued after receiving reports that a massive landslide had obstructed the flow of the Chameliya River -- a tributary of the Kali River near Gethigada village -- causing a large volume of water to pool up.

He said the information regarding this situation was conveyed by the Chief District Officers of Nepal's Baitadi and Darchula districts.

The official said, "The water level of the Kali River in the area is currently normal, but we have issued an alert for the villages situated along the river. Anticipating a potential rise in the water level, we have also requested the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to remain prepared to assist."
