A sub-inspector has been arrested from the very police station he headed in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district on charges of raping a minor, police said on Wednesday.

Police said sub-inspector Mahendra Mishra, who is in charge of the Mauganj station, initially put up the 15-year-old victim at a local lodge on July 26. The following day, he took the girl to his residence and allegedly raped her for three days. She was then asked to return to her hometown.

When the girl asked Mishra to marry her, he refused. The girl and her mother then went to the Mauganj police station to lodge a report. Police said that although Mishra’s colleagues tried to hush up the matter, it came to the notice of senior officers. He was booked for raping the minor under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on Tuesday.

The girl’s mother said that another daughter of hers had killed herself six months ago, and Mishra was investigating the case. During his visits to their home, he allegedly sexually exploited the girl by threatening to implicate the two in the suicide.

Rewa superintendent of police Sushant Saxena confirmed that Mishra has been arrested and remanded in jail.
