Five members of a family on their way home in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur from the Vaishno Devi Temple in Jammu and Kashmir were charred to death after the taxi they were travelling in caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Alwar district late on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.

Police said the five were found dead in the burning car by the time a team rushed to the scene. A National Highway Authority of India patrol called the fire brigade vehicle to extinguish the fire, and the bodies were sent to the mortuary of the Alwar District Hospital for post-mortem.

Neki Ram, a local police officer, identified the five as Santosh Kumar, 35, his wife Shashi, 33, mother-in-law Parvati,50, and daughter Ragni,13. The fifth person in the car, a woman, was not immediately identified.

Vinod Kumar Mehar, the car driver, jumped out of the burning car. He was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors referred him to Jaipur.

Police said the family had hired the taxi to visit the Vaishno Devi Temple and added that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
