A school teacher in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district has been booked for allegedly beating ten female students studying in Class 10 with a cane, leaving them with severe hand injuries, police said.

Enraged teacher beat students

According to a police statement cited by news agency PTI, the accused, identified as Thenmaria Suganthi, was conducting a Class 11 session when she became angry over noise coming from an adjacent Class 10 classroom.

She allegedly entered the Class 10 room and caned the students, leaving around 10 of them with severe injuries to their hands. The students were taken to VK Pudur Government Hospital and nearby private healthcare facilities for treatment.

One of the injured students was later shifted to Tenkasi Government Hospital, where she remained admitted for three days, officials said, according to a PTI report.

The students were unable to attend school or appear for their exams due to swelling in their hands. Following this, one of the parents approached the District Collector and filed a formal complaint.

Based on the complaint, Veerakeralampudur police registered a case against the teacher under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for voluntarily causing hurt, along with relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. Further investigation into the matter is underway, said the report.

The incident reminded of a 2024 episode in Tamil Nadu in which a football coach was seen kicking and slapping players, triggering widespread outrage and calls for strict action against him.

In a video of the incident, members of the football team are seen sitting on the ground while the coach speaks to them. He then slapped a player sitting at the end of the line before turning to others and assaulting them. The coach was also seen kicking some players and pulling the hair of others, as the students attempted to shield themselves from the assault.
