The negative sells, positively! And, this has been successfully experienced by small-screen actor Jayati Bhatia who started her career with positive roles but got real recognition playing negative characters.

“Negative roles get more response and people start noticing your more. Playing a baddie role and that too, specially by a woman, has greater impact,” says Bhatia, who plays a flamboyant ‘Titli mami’ in ‘Sinndoor — Tere naam ka’. The mantra of playing negative roles is that you do it so religiously that people start hating you. And, when you are in full form, your characters gets deeper into the audience, she explains.

It helps personally too! “Playing negative roles is more challenging. Every person has that instinct. When we act, we bring out the inner possibilities and it helps us individually,” she says, adding that, “Once I noticed that I was not being good to my sister-in-law. On realising that I felt it was the impact of that negative role which was in my head and I got carried away. I corrected my behaviour later. Now, I can distinguish between the two. It has helped me in a big way.”

The negative aspect is that viewer sometimes starts disliking you. To break that shell, she is now playing the positive role of a mother in Viraasat with will be on air next month.

“We have to jumble roles so that you are not typecast. Another thing, when you play negative roles, the focus is on you. As the role builds up, that character is brought into focus but finally, the bad has to fizzle out,” she adds.

But doesn’t influence the viewers negatively? “No, not at all,” says Jayati adding, “I take it the other way. God has given us the quality which makes us realise the difference. Moreover, we portray all shades of the character. Viewers can distinguish and choose not to be bad.”

After playing good roles in ‘Itihas’, ‘Kanyadan’ ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ she is awaiting an offer for the big screen. Ask her what role will she like to play and she signs off with a quick “A negative one!”
