The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday revoked the suspension of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, a day after she met chief minister Akhilesh Yadav along with her husband and fellow IAS officer Abhishek Singh.
“As of now she is attached with the board of revenue. The government is likely to give her fresh appointment in next two days,” Rajiv Kumar, principal secretary (appointment), said.
The 2010-batch IAS officer was suspended on July 27, for ostensibly not following due process of law while demolishing the wall of an under-construction mosque at Kadalpur village in Gautam Budh Nagar district. Nagpal was then posted as sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Greater Noida’s Sadar area.
The CM and the ruling Samajwadi Party came in for widespread criticism over her suspension amid suspicion that she was punished for her crackdown on the sand mafia operating along the Hindon and Yamuna rivers in the area.
The CM had appointed principal secretary (home) RM Srivastava as the inquiry officer in the case on August 29 and sought a report within 15 days.
“I have not completed my probe as yet,” Srivastava said, declining to share any more information.
The CM had said Nagpal’s suspension was an administrative decision because her actions could have disturbed communal harmony.
The suspension triggered a massive controversy as different versions of the case surfaced and the Akhilesh Yadav government was accused of playing communal politics and supporting the sand mafia.
Soon, a video of SP leader Narinder Bhati claiming to have got Nagpal suspended in “41 minutes” emerged.
Nagpal could not be reached for comment. On Saturday, Nagpal and her husband had met the CM for nearly 15 minutes, leading to speculation that revocation of her suspension was on the cards.
Though no official information about the meeting was given, sources claimed the CM gave her a patient hearing.
