A 27-year-old woman, daughter-in-law of Bahujan Samaj Party Rajya Sabha MP Narendra Kashyap, was found dead with a bullet injury to her head at her Ghaziabad residence on Wednesday morning.

The victim’s family has alleged that it is a “premeditated murder due to demands of dowry”.

According to the police, Himanshi Kashyap sustained a single gunshot injury to her head and was rushed to the Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad by her in-laws. The hospital authorities informed the police about the incident.

“She sustained one bullet injury on the right side of the head and was brought dead around 12.15pm,” said Dr Sangeeta Garg, chief medical superintendent, Yashoda Hospital, Ghaziabad.

The police said Himanshi was found dead in the washroom adjacent to the first floor bedroom in her Sanjay Nagar residence.

“During the initial investigation, we did not find any weapon in the washroom. We found a licensed pistol (.32 caliber) in the bedroom on top of an almirah and have seized that. They (the in-laws) told us that the weapon belongs to Himanshi’s husband but they are yet to hand over its licence. Further, they told us that they broke open the washroom door which was locked from inside. But we did not find the inside lock broken. They (in-laws) did not inform the police immediately – we were alerted by the hospital authorities,” said Salman Taj, superintendent of police (SP), Ghaziabad.

The police said they believe the incident took place around 11am-11.30am. The MP and other family members were at home at that time. The police also said Himanshi had a bluish-black mark over her eye.

Himanshi, the daughter of BSP politician Hiralal Kashyap from Badaun district, was a post-graduate. She got married Kashyap’s son Sagar, who is pursuing his higher studies in medicine, three years ago. The couple has a son aged one-and-a-half years.

Himanshi’s parents, who reached Ghaziabad from Badaun on Wednesday evening, blamed the MP and his family and accused them of murdering their daughter for dowry.

“They beat up my daughter 15 days ago and she had asked me to take her back. At least on three occasions, I complained to the MP about the matter. I will see to it that they are jailed. She (Himanshi) was repeatedly asking me to give them (her in-laws) a car. But I told her to wait for a month till I get money from a property deal. My daughter was harassed by the MP’s family since the beginning. I will commit suicide in front of Parliament if the culprits are not sent to jail,” said Hiralal Kashyap, Himanshi’s father.

MP Narendra Kashyap denied all allegations and termed the incident as “a case of suicide”.

“I was downstairs with the family and Himanshi was in her room. I sent one of my nephews to call Himanshi. He went up and she did not open the washroom door even after repeated calls. He then called us and we went upstairs. Thereafter, we broke open the door and found Himanshi lying in a pool of blood with the weapon beside her. But no one heard any gunshot. We rushed her to the hospital,” Kashyap said.

“I had cordial relations with her father for long and also attended a function together on Tuesday. The marriage was done without taking a dowry. I am ready for any investigation and will cooperate with the police,” he added.

Taj said the police are awaiting a written complaint from Himanshi’s family after the autopsy and cremation formalities.
