Amid intense lobbying by various factions, the Congress party Friday fielded Renu Jogi, wife of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi, as its candidate for the by-election to the Kota assembly seat.
Renu Jogi filed her nomination papers at the Bilaspur collectorate office in the presence of many Congress legislators of the state and thousands of buoyant party workers. Friday was the last day of filing of nominations.
But Ajit Jogi's opposition camp leaders and loyalists mainly belonging to All India Congress Committee treasurer Motilal Vora and leader of the opposition in state assembly Mahendra Karma stayed away from the Congress rally.
The state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Bhupendra Singh Thakur as party candidate who lost the Kota seat to Congress party's senior leader Rajendra Prasad Shukla in the last assembly poll held in December 2003 with a margin of 1,000 votes.
Election for the Kota seat was necessitated as Rajendra Prasad Shukla, a former Chhattisgarh assembly speaker, died recently after prolonged illness. The polls will be held on December 4.
