The continuous drawing of water by submersible pumps at construction sites is reducing groundwater level around the city.
To check rampant misuse of groundwater in the city. In January, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed to seal all tubewells used for purposes other than drinking and domestic consumption.
Despite the Punjab and Haryana High Court order, a number of construction sites in Mayfield Gardens and other areas, groundwater extraction is taking place in full swing. Five tubewells used for construction activities were sealed by the local administration on Friday.
Besides, some more are likely to be sealed soon. The sealing was carried out on the complaint of the residents’ welfare association of Mayfield Gardens.
“These submersible pumps were being run at construction sites in block B, K and N. Some more pumps are likely to be sealed on Saturday,” said Cdr (retd) Dharam Vir Yadav, president of Mayfield Gardens Residents Welfare Association.
