Asks people not to fall prey to false promises being made by opponents. Does not address Haryana-specific issues.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati singled out the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime mimisterial candidate Narendra Modi and said he had been making false promises to lure voters.

Speaking at a rally in Gurgaon on Tuesday, she asked the people, especially from the backward sections of the society and the poor, not to fall prey to the glib promises being made by the BJP and other parties, including the Congress.

They have never been able to fulfill even 50% of the promises made in their manifestos, she said.

To counter Modi’s Gujarat model of development, the BSP chief came up with the Uttar Pradesh model and claimed that the state had witnessed unprecedented development when her government was in power. “There is no development in Gujarat, but Modi misguided the people of the country in the name of development,” she claimed.

Mayawati’s rally was aimed at garnering support for BSP candidates from Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak and Sonepat parliamentary constituencies.

The BSP is contesting on all 10 seats in Haryana without any poll alliance.“We have not entered into any kind of understanding or alliance with any other parties and are contesting elections on own strength. Our candidates got tickets solely on the basis of their merit,” she said.

In her address, Mayawati attacked the Congress, although she did not address any Haryana-specific issues or mention chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

She said that the condition of the ‘bahujan samaj’, which includes the SCs, STs, OBCs and the upper caste poor, had not improved even decades after Independence. “They (the Centre) worked for the benefit of the capitalists and grabbed the land of the poor. Our party does not take support of the capitalists and the rich and so does not buckle under their pressure,” she added.
