Indian airports on high alert for hijack

The alert has been sounded on the basis of reports sent by intelligence agencies to the Home Ministry.

All Indian airports were put on high alert following warnings from intelligence agencies that terrorists may hijack a plane, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"The alert has been sounded on the basis of certain reports sent by intelligence agencies to the Home Ministry," a senior civil aviation ministry official said.

"Airlines have been advised to inform passengers to reach airports well ahead of time so that there are no delays due to security checks," the official said.

"Security at all airports has been tightened and the ministry is closely working with security agencies," he added.
