Make music compulsory in school curriculum: Segal
?Music and dance should be introduced as a compulsory subject in schools in India,? said well known Odissi dancer Kiran Segal.
“Music and dance should be introduced as a compulsory subject in schools in India,” said well known Odissi dancer Kiran Segal.

She was speaking during a programme organised by SpicMacay in the city to familiarize the youth with the great Indian performing arts. She also saw no problem with the trend of youth showing more inclination towards western music and culture. “The western arts too have a lot of good things to teach,” she said. However, the increasing interest of the younger generation in western music, according to her, was due to the fact that it could be learnt easily, while the Indian music and dances demanded much more time and commitment.
Earlier, Segal, disciple of Guru Mayadhara Raut and known for her precision and lyricism in movement, inaugurated the dance function by lighting the lamp at Dr Virendra Swarup Education Centre, Kidwai Nagar. It was followed by the dance performance of her disciples Supriya Nayak and Anuradha Verma.
Segal, later, explained to students about the various mudras performed during the dance and their importance. She also gave a mesmerising performance “Abhinya” set to rag Kalyan depicting Radha and Krishna. The musical team accompanying her included Satyanarayan (vocalist), Surendra Maharana (Mardala), and Vijai Kumar (Flautist). She also gave a similar performance at Delhi Public School, Azad Nagar on Monday.
