North Korean diplomats in Vienna held informal talks this month with officials from the United Nations nuclear watchdog on issues such as a possible resumption of inspections of the country's nuclear complex at Yongbyon, reported Japan's Kyodo news.

Kyodo, quoting sources close to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said North Korea had said at the talks that a resumption of the inspections would depend on the outcome of six-party talks on its nuclear programme that begin in Beijing on Wednesday.

Kyodo said it was the first substantial contact between North Korea and the IAEA since the agency's inspectors were kicked out of the reclusive communist country in December 2002.
