There is a buzz on the first floor of Lata Kunj in Mumbai’s Andheri West. The venue is the site of the a film set and you’re surprised to hear a child’s voice issuing instructions to the unit: “Clear the field.” Boy wonder Master Kishan is wielding the baton at the tender age of nine. One is impressed to see the team obey the little master promptly. “Jackie uncle, ready?” says Kishan. The suave Shroff answers in the affirmative and they’re in the act.
Later, while the light men are setting up the next shot, Kishan says: “I began with modelling, which led to roles in films. Once, while travelling with my father, I saw slum kids selling newspapers, working when they should be studying. That’s how I thought of the script.” Based in Bangalore, son of a Sales Tax officer, Kishan began his acting career at the age of four and has since worked in 24 films and 300 television episodes. He composed his first song at the age of six for the south film hit, Hello (sung by Kumar Sanu). Besides, Kishan has sung for the film Jootata down South. Studying in Class V, Kishan also pays income tax and professional taxes.
Soon an assistant director informs the ‘boss’ that the next shot is ready. Titled c/o Footpath, the film revolves around a prodigy from the slums who gets noticed by the chief minister who then helps the boy climb the academic ladder. Essaying the role of the chief minister is Jackie. “I met Kishan at a party where I learnt that he’s directing a film. And I asked him for a role,” says the actor. The camaraderie he shares with his director is no less awesome.
Besides directing, Kishan is also acting in the film as the protagonist, sharing screen time with Saurabh Shukla and South Indian actress Tara. Produced by Kiran Movie Makers, the film will see Kishan register his name in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the youngest film director. Lord Sydney Ling presently holds the record for directing a film at the age of 13.
