The Punjab chapter of Bhartiya Kisan Union on Tuesday demanded that the Jats in the state -- Hindus as well as Sikhs -- be included in the list of other backward classes (OBCs).

Most of the Jats in Punjab, who are traditionally farmers, were debt-ridden, Punjab BKU Working President Manjit Singh Kadyan said in a statement here adding, the Jats had already been included among OBCs in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi. There was no reason as to why the Jats in Punjab should not get the same benefit, he said.

He urged the Punjab government to take the initiative to include the Jats in the OBC category like the other states have done.
