When Steve Waugh won the 1999 World Cup, not many would have thought that he would be struggling for a place four years later or, for that matter, Hansie Cronje would not even be alive to see his team play, after being stripped of captaincy.

While some captains got too old, others got embroiled in controversies for which they had to be replaced. However, call it a deficiency of shrewd captains in New Zealand cricket or the sheer leadership qualities and determination of the man, Stephen Fleming remains the only surviving skipper from the 1999 World Cup participants.
