Mohinder Amarnath claimed the first wicket in the World Cup history. He dismissed J A Jameson of England, having him caught by skipper S Venkataraghavan.

The Kenyan captain in the 1996 World Cup, Maurice Odumbe, was refused an autograph by Brian Lara while the West Indian was playing for Warwickshire. When Lara went to the Kenyan dressing room after the Africans stunned West Indies in Pune in 1996, Odumbe said, "Now you should be asking for my autograph."
The 1987 World Cup saw the appointment of neutral umpires for the first time in Cup history. England’s well known umpire, Dickie Bird who is known for officiating during the tournament finals, was forced to miss out here as England were playing in the final.
Kapil Dev had to miss out the 1992 World Cup opening ceremony. The Indian all rounder was stuck at the Hong Kong airport for two days, waiting for a connecting flight to Sydney.
Pakistan had two captains in one Cup edition, twice. In 1975, Majid Khan and Asif Iqbal led the team while in 1992, Imran Khan and Javed Miandad captained the side. On both occasions, the official captains, Asif and Imran, were injured.
