Like Sunil Gavaskar, Javed Miandad also did not get a warm reception in his farewell innings, when he was run out against India at Bangalore in the 1996 World Cup quarter-final. As soon as Miandad was declared run out by the third umpire, jubilant crowds began celebrating India's victory. No one noticed it was Miandad's last innings. It was a very upset Miandad who returned to the pavilion.

After early disappointments for India in the league stages of the 1999 World Cup in England, thousands of Indian fans sold off their tickets for remaining matches at throwaway price. Hundreds of tickets for the India-Kenya Group A clash passed hands at a very low premium. This was a great embarrassment for the organisers, who had earlier announced that tickets for matches featuring India had been sold out weeks before the start.
