An alleged sandalwood thief was shot dead by security guards when a group of men were trying to smuggle out the priced wood from the National Defence Academy campus in Pune, police said on Wednesday.
Twelve men last night entered the campus, situated at Hadakwasla which is 20 km from Pune, which has a number of sandalwood trees.
The guards of the Defence Security Corps intercepted them who opened fire at the fleeing smugglers, police said.
While 11 of them managed to escape, one was killed in the firing, police said.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.
