Rated as a highly successful politician, Union Minister and BJP MP from Chandni Chowk Vijay Goel has outsmarted his opponents by his level-headed and calculated approach. While his opponents kept fighting over small issues, he invariably took the right decisions and earned a place at the Centre.
Goel, who had his education at the Shri Ram College of Commerce, learned the tricks of the trade in Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU). He was elected the union's president in 1977.
Goel was first elected as an MP in 1996 and subsequently in 1998 and 1999. He has been appointed to various parliamentary committees, notably the JPC on stock market scam.
He was sworn in as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office and Planning on September 1, 2001. He assumed charge in PMO the same day and that of the Planning on September 3, 2001.
Born on January 4, 1954 in Delhi to Shri Chharti Lal Goel and Smt Basanti Devi, Goel is a Commerce Post Graduate and a Law Graduate. HIs father was deputy mayor of the Delhi Assembly and is now its speaker.
Goel has been very active on the social and cultural front as well. In 1990, he spearheaded the formation of a socio-cultural organisation called Lok Abhiyan. He took part in many campaigns, including the ban on lottery and smoking in public places.
He is married to Prof Preeti Goel, a Professor in Delhi University and is the father of a son and a daughter. During leisure, Goel prefers listening to music or playing the tabla.
