Gone are the days when women would shy away from showing their baby bumps. Now, it is not only about flaunting the baby bump but also getting a maternity photo shoot done to capture the memory.

Gone are the days when women would shy away from showing their baby bump fearing some unseen omen casting its spell on them. Now, it is not only about flaunting the baby bump, but also getting a maternity photo shoot done to secure the wonderful memory associated with it.

The photo shoots, which are increasingly becoming popular amongst couples, aim at capturing the essence of motherhood.

"Maternity shoots are very different from pre-wedding and wedding shoots. Here, the focus is on the couple, about the woman, the mother. Though we do take the couple together for some shoots, the limelight is on the mother," said Vijeta Shrivastava, a photographer who does maternity shoots.

From using different props and locations to themes, a variety of inputs go into making the photo shoots perfect. "We use different themes. If the couple knows they will have twins, we play on that. Moreover, if the parents are doctors or into some other profession, the shoot is custom made," said Vivek Samaiya, an Indore-based photographer.

Shot in the seventh and eighth month preferably, the photographers share the level of customisation people look for in these photo shoots. "I usually give the clients a questionnaire to find out their take. Once I am able to come to a conclusion, I begin the shoot," said Vijeta.

While a lot of thinking goes behind the shoot, the photographers share the challenges associated with the shoot. Vijeta said, "You cannot travel to different locations, as the mother cannot bear a lot of stress. Moreover the poses, props and make-up have to be apt. In India, women do not expose their naked baby bump as in the US, so we usually stick to a normal gown and some light make up which can add glow to the expecting mother."

With prices as high as Rs 20,000 for five to ten pictures, the photographers feel that in the coming months, a lot of experiments will be done in this genre.
