IPL 2017 Review: Mumbai Indians top charts as number of sixes hit sees a rise

IPL 2017 saw a considerable rise in the number of sixes hit, with champions Mumbai Indians bagging the highest among the eight teams

After 56 days, the tenth edition of IPL came to an end with Mumbai Indians becoming champions for the third time by securing a thrilling one-run win over Rising Pune Supergiant at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

This edition of IPL began slowly in terms of run-scoring but picked up towards the end. Let us go through to the statistical highlights related to the number of sixes:

10.5% rise: In comparison to IPL 2016, the six count went up from 638 to 705.

Aussies all the way: As many as 93 batsmen hit sixes with Kings XI Punjab’s Glenn Maxwell and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s David Warner sharing the top spot with 26 each. Delhi Daredevils’ Rishabh Pant took the third spot with 24 sixes.

Another accolade: Mumbai Indians hit the most sixes in IPL 2017. Sixteen MI players hit a total of 117 sixes.

History: The record for most sixes in a single edition was set in 2012 when 104 batsmen hit 731 sixes in 74 matches. It remains unbroken. Ninety three batsmen smashed 638 sixes in 120 innings of 60 matches last year.
