A woman from the industrial township of Durgapur, Burdwan, was allegedly gang raped while returning from Asansol on Sunday night. A case has been filed with the cops and the victim sent for medical tests.
Police commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur commissionerate, Ajay Kumar Nand visited the spot on Monday. The victim is a 36-year-old employed at a diagnostics centre in Asansol, where she developed a rapport with a doctor at the facility. This led to bitter arguments with her husband over the last few days.
Her husband is an employee of State Bank of India, Tarekeshwar branch, in Hooghly, and they live at the Ispat colony in Durgapur sub division of Burdwan.
On learning of the problem, the doctor asked to meet the victim’s husband. They called him to the Piyala Kalimandi near the forests at Durgapur. After work the couple went to the spot where the husband was waiting.
The husband and wife were in the middle of a heated exchange when suddenly a group of men turned up and dragged the woman into the nearby forest area, and raped her.
“We initiated rape case. The medical reports confirm she was raped. According to the victim there were at least four men but she was raped by three of them and there were all drunk," a senior officer said.
The husband and her doctor friend fled from the spot. The husband rushed to the police station to inform the cops. By the time the police reached the spot, the gang had already fled. Police said the accused were all local residents.
They found the victim sitting at the Kali temple, her clothes in tatters.
Police have been interrogating the trio as to why they had chosen to meet at such a lonely spot near the jungle, and the reason behind the meeting. The woman’s jeans were found hanging from a nearby tree. PIRTALA RAPE
