The Brunch round-up for August 15: The week and how it made us feel

This week, we’re flexing ugly shoes, bringing back capri pants, getting tattooed for a job and skateboarding during the eclipse
Into Peanuts. The internet has been manifesting this for years. Hallelujah! Ayo Edebiri is playing Snoopy in the off-Broadway production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Fans have long clocked the two as spiritual twins, even photoshopping the beagle into Edebiri’s red carpet pics. We see the vision. They’re both the same brand of joyful and unbothered.

Needlessly needled. Yeah yeah, the job market sucks. But at least you didn’t have to get a tattoo for a job. At a networking event, an American AI startup founder “dared” attendees to get tattooed – permanently – for just the chance to be interviewed. People actually got inked and called it a “risk-taking opportunity” on LinkedIn. More proof that tech bros should study the humanities.

On display. How insane do you want your movie promo to be? Netflix: Yes. Last week, the streaming company built a house on a billboard on LA’s Sunset Boulevard and got a man to live in it, with a glass wall for everyone else to watch. He had AC, snacks and a free room – and got paid for it. An LA high-rise home with a view and no rent? He’s living the dream.

Feeling gnarly. Katseye lost another member. Sophia Laforteza is on a mental-health break. At this point, the Hybe-owned group should just disband. Even devoted fans called out their lyrics (singing “Eat zucchini” while twerking is so creepy) and their overly sexualised outfits. Not a good look for a band that has members as young as 18.

Playing footsie. Heels? So last season. Fashion’s foot fetish is all about the big toe now. We’ve seen the ugly tabi-shoe obsession. At Copenhagen Fashion Week, many styles gave Big-Toe energy. The Nike Skims Rift looks perfect for those who want to twin with their horse. Hailey Bieber is a fan of Valentino’s pig hoof pumps. Freaky footwear forever.

A bit reflective. Forget pervy Meta glasses. British artist Freddie Yauner’s mirror mask is the accessory we want. His What I’m Looking At eyewear essentially reflects the world the wearer is facing. It lets the wearer view without being viewed. It’s art we get. Now, we can touch grass, and watch it too.

Aura-maxxing. It’s skateboarder Danny Leon’s world and we’re just living in it. The Spanish Olympic athlete timed his jump to coincide with a solar eclipse, resulting in the hardest picture of all time. This was also Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years, BTW. Can he drop a tutorial next on how to be so cool?

Kicking back. Gen Z is determined to reanimate dead Y2K trends. First, low-waist pants, then velour. Now, capris or pedal-pushers. They’re the most unflattering style of the pants kingdom, designed to make short people look shorter, broad people broader and perfectly good legs seem like a design flaw. This is where we get off the nostalgia train.
