In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Madhuri Roy, Gynaecologist and IVF Consultant, Founder and managing director of Conceive IVF at Pune, explained, “It is less likely that one of his swimmers will fertilise your egg if he has a low sperm count. A low sperm count indicates that there are fewer sperm than usual in his semen. 15 million to 200 million sperm per millilitre of semen is considered a normal sperm count. A man is said to have a low sperm count if his count is less than 15 million.”

Talking about how much does low sperm count mean, she revealed, "A "normal" sperm count ranges from 15 million to 200 million sperm per millilitre of semen. The World Health Organization's 2010 recommendations also state that sperm counts below 15 million per millilitre are deemed low. A precise counting of your little soldiers may be obtained from a semen analysis, allowing you to keep track of your whereabouts."

She added, “The good news is that male infertility does not always result from a low sperm count. Additionally, there are things you may take to boost your sperm count and improve the chances of having a kid together.” To improve your sperm count and maintain the chances in your favour, Dr Madhuri Roy suggested following these steps:

1. Exercise to bring it in

One of the best methods to boost your sperm count is through exercise. Your testosterone levels and the quality of your sperm can both rise with regular exercise. Men who work out at least three times a week for around an hour have been shown to have more sperm, according to research. Increasing testosterone is a special benefit of strength exercise but hold off on becoming Arnold Schwarzenegger overnight. Your testosterone levels may actually drop if you exercise too much. Balance is the key.

2. Consume wholesome, nutrient-rich foods

Not just the mom's nutritional requirements will be tested during the pregnancy; males also require nutrients that increase fertility. According to research, expectant fathers require a lot of vitamins C and E, zinc, and folic acid, which are mostly found in nutritious meals like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein.

Walnuts and other foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, have also been demonstrated to improve sperm quality. Additionally, shortages of vitamins C, D and E, zinc, selenium, folic acid, and good fats like omega-3 fatty acids may affect the quantity and quality of sperm.

3. Reduced tension

Helping your partner unwind can help him produce more sperm and will also make sex more enjoyable. Make sure he gets enough rest and exercises frequently (but avoid ultramarathons; it has been demonstrated that excessive exercise reduces testosterone levels and sperm quality). Additionally, encourage him to practise relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation, or offer him a massage.

4. Put away your tighty-whities

Briefs or boxers? When it comes to becoming pregnant, boxers are the solution. Your scrotum may become overly heated as a result of wearing clothing with a tight crotch, which may reduce sperm production. According to research, #TeamBoxers had more sperm than people who wore briefs.

5. Give up drinking and smoking

Lower sperm counts have been associated with recreational drug use and smoking. A man's stats might also drop if he drinks as much. These behaviours combined are especially detrimental to male fertility. Additionally, research indicates that males who smoke have weaker libido desires and engage in less intercourse often. Additionally, smoking, using recreational drugs, and drinking alcohol may have an impact on his performance in the bedroom.

Dr Madhuri Roy highlighted, “The majority of evidence supports using dietary modifications, natural treatments, and lifestyle changes to assist a man manage and increase a low sperm count. Adopting a regular exercise routine, and a sleep schedule, and abstaining from cigarettes, excessive drinking, and illegal substances are a few examples of such lifestyle modifications. The avoidance of some prescription drugs may also be beneficial.”

Male infertility is a widespread issue. There is nothing shameful about it. You may increase your loads in a variety of ways. If DIY remedies don't work, consult your doctor. Based on your particular demands, they can assist you in locating the ideal options.
