Without naming Rahul Gandhi, Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said it was regrettable that the Congress president was calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘thief’.

Countering the Congress slogan ‘Chowkidar chor hai’, he said in Hindi, “our chowkidar is not chor, but he is pure.” Singh was speaking at an election meeting at Gaura under Unchahar assembly segment to seek votes for BJP’s Rae Bareli candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh who is pitted against United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Dinesh Pratap Singh is a former Congress legislator.

The union home minister said the prime minister and the President were not only individuals but institutions in themselves. He appealed to the gathering to teach the Congress a lesson through their votes.

Asserting that Modi will be the PM once again, he said “Charo aur shor hai, Modi once more hai (There is a buzz everywhere that Modi will be the PM once again).” Four-and-a-half years of Modi rule had catapulted India to the sixth place among countries with the strongest economies, he said. India’s economy had been described as the fastest growing in the world, he said.

The government was providing Rs 6,000 per year to small and marginal farmers under a special scheme, the home minister said, adding they were also being given Rs 1 lakh interest-free loan on kisan credit card. Polling in Rae Bareli is scheduled on May 6 and the counting of votes will take place on May 23.
