The two main accused in the murder of Vaibhav Tewari, a village pradhan and son of former MLA Prem Prakash Tewari’s, were arrested from a city court premises when they reached to surrender here on Tuesday afternoon.

The two accused, Vikram Singh and Suraj Shukla, were on run after Tewari was shot dead outside his residence, Kasmanda Apartments in Hazratganj area of Lucknow, on Saturday night.

The deceased’s father was a three-time MLA from the Domariyaganj constituency of Siddharthnagar district. The incident created sensation in the city as it took place barely 300 meters from the Vidhan Bhawan and the state BJP office.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Lucknow, Deepak Kumar said four teams of city police were deployed to nab Shukla and Singh but didn’t get their clue for over 48 hours.

He said the police had an apprehension since beginning that the two accused would attempt to surrender to evade police custody. “We had deployed our men in civvies to keep watch around court premises and eventually, it yielded us a result. The duo was arrested when they reached the court to surrender,” he said.

The SSP told that the city police had applied for a seven-day police remand to interrogate the two accused and recover the firearm used in the crime.

A source said the two accused had planned to disguise police and reach the court hiding their face with scarf but the specific tip off by a group of lawyers helped the cops identify the duo.

Earlier, the SSP had announced the reward of ₹20,000 each for arrest of the two accused on Sunday.

One of the two accused, Vikram Singh is believed to have received patronage from local cops as he grew his nexus and got involved in extortion activities in Hazratganj and its vicinity. The role of some police officials is suspected in allowing Singh an easy escape after he opened fire on Vaibhav.

The initial probe revealed that monetary dispute between Vaibhav and Shukla related to property business was the reason behind the incident. To resolve the dispute, Shukla reportedly had taken the help of Singh, who is listed as a history-sheeter at the Hazratganj police station and have over 27 criminal cases registered against him in Lucknow. Allegedly, the duo approached Vaibhav for a conversation, but during an argument, Singh opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.
