Six police constables, including one from Kurla police station and five others attached with local arms of Worli headquarters, were suspended on Tuesday. The move came after a constable of Kurla police station stole 50 cartridges and two Rikamya charger clips from the artillery section.

The suspended police personnel have been identified as Vijay Hirlekar, Sanket Mali, Mahesh Dudhwade, Rahu Pawar, Rahul Kadam and Mahendra Patil.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, when Mali was on duty at the artillery section where ammunition and other items are stored.

Head constable, Hirlekar was in charge of the artillery section and also monitored the other four constables deployed for security, a police officer said.

“All six constables were suspended soon after the incident. An inquiry is being conducted,” said deputy commissioner of police Sunita Salunkhe of Worli Local Arms unit.

As per preliminary investigation, Patil, posted at Kurla police station, went to Worli local arms unit on Saturday night and stole 50 cartridges and two Rikamya charger clips , when Mali, who was on duty was asleep, said Salunkhe.

When Mali woke up and found the cartridges missing, he reported the matter to a senior official and inquiry was ordered, she added.

Patil went to the Dadar police station on Sunday and handed over the cartridges and charger clips which he had stolen.

All six constables were suspended due to security lapse, said another officer.
