Thirty-eight-year-old Vikram Adsul from Ahmednagar, who has been working with the Bandgar Wasti School for 15 years, has made the state proud by bagging the National Award for Teachers, which will be conferred upon him by the President on September 5.

Adsul, who is the only teacher from Maharashtra among the 45 others selected for the award from across India, said he was extremely happy to see his work being recognised at the national level. “I am extremely happy to be the only teacher from the state to have received the honour. This motivates me to keep working for my students.”

From blogs to teaching languages using word games, informing students on social issues through puppetry and using technology to explain concepts, Adsul’s innovative learning practices have been able to impact the lives of several students of Karjat taluka in Ahmednagar.

“In my school, underprivileged children come, mostly from families belonging to nomadic tribes. Over the years, I have tried to work for their betterment through innovative teaching methods. The award will boost my efforts a lot,” he said

In 2017, 28 teachers — both from primary and secondary schools from Maharashtra — were selected for the prestigious award.

This year, only 45 teachers from across India, will be felicitated as the Ministry of Human Resource Development revised the selection criteria.

The teachers will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a silver medal.
