If you had expected that the first meeting of group leaders in the civic body this monsoon would be about the trouble faced by the citizens in the first spell of rains in the city, you are wrong.

The leaders of various parties that have representation in the elected body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday spoke more about a proposal to name a bridge in Andheri after late actress Sridevi and less about the rains.

The proposal was tabled by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Yogiraj Dabhadkar, which was opposed by the opposition parties. Dabhadkar had proposed to name the bridge at Mogra Nullah in Andheri (West) as Actress Sridevi Uddanpul (road overbridge). The proposal has been sent back to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta for his opinion on the matter.

The Congress and the Samajwadi Party opposed the proposal stating that the late actress has made no known contribution towards public welfare. Ravi Raja, leader of opposition in BMC, said, “There is no doubt that Sridevi was a brilliant actor, but what was her contribution towards the public? The proposal has no such information about that and only mentions about the films she has worked in. The proposal has been sent to the civic chief for his opinion.”

This is the BMC’s first group leaders meeting after the onset of monsoon. The city continues to face severe water-logging in several areas. This monsoon once again revealed the city to have clogged drains, unclean nullahs and pothole-ridden roads that resurfaced. There were also incidences of tree fall.
