A senior citizen couple was run over by a train while crossing the tracks at Dombivli station on Tuesday.

According to the railway police, the couple was hit by the mail express while crossing the railway tracks. Around 5.10pm, Vijay Pawaskar, 72, and his wife Savita, 69, were found dead on the tracks after being hit by an express train. After the accident was reported the police scrutinised the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage.

“Around 5pm, the aged couple was seen on platform number 5 at Dombivli station. The couple was seen walking towards the Kalyan end of the station,” said S Pawar, senior police inspector, Dombivli Government Railway Police (GRP). “A few minutes after the couple left the platform, a Gorakhpur express train crossed the track. So, we suspect the couple was run over by the same train while crossing the railway track,” he added. The police officers contacted the family of the victim with the help of their Aadhaar card and mobile phone.

The couple was taken to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

On Monday, Thane station recorded three deaths. While two died while crossing track, a 59-year-old man slipped into the gap while boarding a CSMT-bound local and was run over.
