Thane residents might have to approach a different ward office for paying their taxes or to carry out any civic work.
After the delimitation of the election wards, the administrative wards in the city are likely to be reshuffled. As per the new proposal, if passed by the general body,Diva and Shil will be a new ward while two of the existing wards will be merged together.
Last year, the corporation demarcated new election wards following the directives from the election commission. These wards were based on population and geographical features. The number of wards decreased from 65 to 33 following delimitation, from which 131 corporators were elected during the February 2017 civic polls.
A civic official said, “In the proposed, Kopri will be merged with Naupada while the Lokmanya Sawarkar ward and Railadevi wards will become one. The demarcation will also result in separation of Shil and Diva in Mumbra.”
Thane at present is divided into 10 administrative wards and has a the population of more than 22 lakh.
“After the ward delimitation for civic elections, areas have undergone a lot of changes. It is important to revise the boundaries of each of the ward committee to prevent confusion or overlapping. In the newly proposed wards, Kalwa ward has the highest population of 2.49 lakh while Uthalsar has the lowest of 1.54 lakh.”
