MUMBAI: As many as 53 of the 227 elected corporators from the city have 151 criminal cases against them, of which 28 corporators were booked in criminal cases following the 2012 civic polls. This revelation was made in a recently published report by Praja on Mumbai’s corporators. It is Shiv Sena, which tops the list of corpoartors with most criminal cases against them.

While there were 29 corporators who have criminal cases registered against them, about 28 have cases filed against them in the last four years. Moreover, 39 corporators have charge sheets filed against them till December 2015.

SENA AT THE TOP

About 17 Sena corporators have criminal cases against them. Further, the top three corporators with most number of cases registered against them are also from the Sena. Raju Pednekar tops the list with 12 first information reports (FIRs) against him, followed by Anant Nar (11 FIRs) and Ramesh Korgaonkar (8 FIRs) .

However, these cases were filed before the election. While 11 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporators have criminal cases against them, for Congress the number stands at nine.

“While giving out the ratings, criminal cases are considered to be a parameter for negative marking. In case an FIR was filed before December 2015, we gave that corporator minus five,” said Milind Mhaske, project director of Praja.

Of the 25,215 people surveyed, a sizeable number of this sample feel that corruption has decreased in the past five years. While 47% of the sample size surveyed in 2011 believed corruption had decreased considerably, the number this year dwindled to 33 % .
