Apart from Sanjay Dutt, four more convicts whose appeals were rejected by the Supreme Court but were given extensions, surrendered before the designated TADA court on Thursday.
The convicts who surrendered on Thursday include Kersi Adjania, Altaf Shaikh, Yusuf Nulwalla and Essa Memon. All the convicts appeared before the court after the lunch break. After the formal procedure of verification of their identities, the court asked the police to take them all in custody and they were later sent to jail.
All these convicts had requested the court to allow things of basic necessities and medicines to be carried with them inside the jail. The court has allowed the convicts to do so for a month. The convicts will then have to request the jail authorities for the permission to further use these amenities.
The apex court had on March 21, rejected the appeals filed by these convicts and had asked them to surrender within four weeks. However, as the deadline to surrender before the court approached, they sought for further extension, and were granted the same for four weeks.
As the final deadline ended on Thursday, all the convicts surrendered before the designated TADA court.
Essa Memon is the brother of prime accused Tiger Memon, who remains absconding, and is booked for conspiracy. A Tada court had sentenced him to life imprisonment and the apex court had confirmed the punishment awarded to him.
Nulwala had picked up the AK-56 rifle from the house of Dutt as per the instructions of the actor and given the weapon to Adajania to destroy. Nalwala is sentenced to five years imprisonment.
82 year old, Adajania was convicted by the TADA judge as he had destroyed the AK-56 rifle possessed by the actor Sanjay Dutt, in his workshop. He was awarded one-year jail term. He has already spent three to four months in jail.
Shaikh was convicted for possessing hand grenades in notified area of TADA. He was awarded five years' imprisonment.
