The police said a minimum of two people were involved in the crime and it took them over a week to dig the tunnel through a nearby gutter which ended below the floor inside the shop.
Deepak Bagwe, senior inspector of MIDC police station said, “It appears that the crime has been committed by locals. It does not appear to be the work of a professional gang.”
The incident took place between 9.30pm on Friday and 9am on Saturday when the shop was closed.
The men entered the shop using the tunnel and left using the same route with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lakh.
They were unable to open the safe and hence only picked up the jewellery displayed in the showcases.
