Kurla rape and murder accused confesses to crime

Javed Rehman Shaikh (19), working with a local cable operator, was arrested on July 1 from his residence in Kurla for allegedly raping and murdering the eight-year-old girl, who was found dead in a house near Balwadi in Vatsalatai Nagar slums of Kurla on June 19.

"He has confessed to the crime," a senior police official said on condition of anonymity. The accused is currently in police custody till July 14.

According to police, Javed was apprehended after his DNA samples matched with that of the victim's body and samples obtained from the crime scene.

However, police are yet to make a breakthrough in other two rape and murder cases of minors in Nehru Nagar area in Kurla.

On February 9, the body of a five-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered, was found in a drain in Nehru Nagar. On March 7, a nine-year-old girl was found raped and murdered on the terrace of a building in Nehru Nagar police quarters.

The investigating officials have taken DNA samples of over hundred suspects to find out whether they match with the DNA samples found on the victims but in vain, the sources added. Javed's questioning has also not given any line of direction for the investigators in these two cases.
