A 57-year-old housemaid who had attempted suicide by hanging at Malwani police station after being detained on charges of stealing jewellery from her employers, died at Raksha hospital on Friday night.
Kunda Shinde and her 17-year-old daughter were illegally detained by police sub-inspector Munir Shaikh, following which he was arrested by the Malwani police.
As per Malwani police, Shinde was admitted to the intensive care unit of Raksha hospital at Marve Road on December 23. After being treated for a week, Shinde was declared dead at 10.30pm on December 31.
Investigating officer of the case, inspector Jaideep Surve of Malwani police station said, “We are waiting for the hospital to give us the cause of death, after which we will add Section 306 (abetment to suicide) in the case against Shaikh. He is currently out on bail and we will approach the court to cancel his bail.”
Shaikh allegedly detained Shinde and her daughter on December 20, after her neighbour S Sawant from Madh alleged that Shinde had stolen her mangalsutra and gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh. Shaikh kept them in custody till Tuesday without arresting them or making a diary entry about it.
Shinde then tried to end her life at the police station. Following this, the Malwani police arrested Shaikh, who is due to retire next year, on Wednesday, on charges of wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement to extort confession, or compel restoration of property under the IPC.
