THANE: The local police shut the Manpada road, a major connecting link to Kalyan, Shilphata, Thane and Navi Mumbai, for traffic over safety concerns, after the explosion at a chemical factory in Dombivli MIDC area.
“As the incident took place during morning peak hours, vehicles had to be diverted,” said a traffic policeman manning the road.
Vehicles coming from Dombivli station were diverted towards GaodeviPan d ur angwa di-Gandhi na garNandivli route, instead of taking the usual Manpada route.
Several residents and activists from Dombivli also helped manage the traffic.
The entire area was sealed by the local police.
“We announced the diversions in all possible ways. Our officials were managing at the spot for hours to ensure motorists are not inconvenienced. The situation was under control,” said SK Dubal, assistant commissioner of police, traffic .
Around 200 traffic wardens were appointed to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
“The traffic department was on high alert after the incident. The repair works at Saket bridge in Thane also lead to congestion but we ensured it didn’t spiral out of control at any point,” said Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, Thane traffic police.
