The department is conducting an examination here on Sunday to fill 437 vacancies.
“We will not let a single postman function if locals are not recruited for the post. How can any outsider work if he does not know Marathi?” said Sandeep Deshpande, the vice-president of the MNS students' wing. He also demanded that the postal department incorporate a clause that candidates should have passed Class X with Marathi as one language.
The MNS had voiced a similar demand last November during clerk recruitment exams.
Of the 4,500 candidates for Sunday’s test, 2,500 are from outside the state.
M.S. Bali, chief postmaster-general (Maharashtra and Goa), said, “We will take all the care to ensure selected candidates know Marathi and are domiciled citizens of the state.”
