Locked out of your home in the middle of the night? Want that particular brand of cigarettes in the middle of the night? Need a bottle of shampoo that you can’t find at any local store? Enter Jugaado, a 24x7 concierge service that claims to fulfil your wishes — all you have to do is send a WhatsApp message or an SMS.
Launched on June 1, the venture has been set up by Rajdeep Mandal, 25, a banker at Deutsche Bank; Prateek Chandra Jha, 23, a student at IIT Bombay; and Soma Haldar, 29, a US-based data scientist. “We wanted to create a service that solves people’s problems,” says Mandal.
Customers can send an SMS or WhatsApp message, discuss the order, and pay on the forwarded payment gateway before the order is registered.
“We get a lot of late-night food and alcohol requests,” says Mandal.
Jugaado’s eight-member team works 24x7 and they deliver all across Mumbai. Since their launch, the team says they have fulfilled 80% of the 450 requests they have received.
Powai resident and aspiring entrepreneur Shreyans Mani, 27, heard about Jugaado on June 8 and has since ordered something from them every day. It started out with a request for a chessboard and has moved on to food, peanut butter and a whiteboard. “They’re a convenient option, useful for times when I don’t want to go out and get the stuff myself,” he says.
Jugaado has a simple rule while taking requests —they won’t provide anything illegal. They outsource alcohol requests to alcohol shops, politely turn down requests for marijuana and don’t buy medicines without prescriptions. Some of the requests are simple — shampoo bottles, bread, soap, a Sanskrit book, even a half-kilo of rice. Others border on strange. “We’ve had people ask us to hack WhatsApp conversations, or find them girlfriends,” says Mandal. “We turn down such requests.”
The delivery charges depend on the distance, urgency, and the price of the product. For instance, a difficult-to-find order costing Rs 2,000 would have added delivery charges of Rs 200 to Rs 300.
Jugaado has plans to expand to other cities and the team is working on an app.
