Voters can send an SMS to a dedicated number with only their full name and age to receive information about the polling booths for the February 2012 civic elections.

The service is part of the several electoral reforms to enhance voter participation. “These steps are being undertaken with the view to increase turnout, for which the details a voter will need should be made available to him easily,” said SS Shinde, joint municipal commissioner.

The civic body has also undertaken a geographic information system (GIS) project to map sanctioned polling booths and put them up on its website, which will also provide details like the electoral list, names of the registered voters, electoral wards they cover.

The civic body plans to invite tenders for developing the GIS by the end of the month.
