The Opposition, however, rejected the senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader's apology in the legislature and stalled proceedings for the day.

At a rally on Saturday, Pawar had asked whether he should urinate in dams to provide water. He had also linked power cuts to population growth.

A public apology from NCP chief Sharad Pawar did not break the Opposition's resolve. Last year too, he had apologised after his nephew called himself a rogue and said he would deal with people the way he wanted.
