The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has decided to revamp bus depots of Mahim and Sion to accommodate the new ‘4-route Corridor’ services.
Under the service, BEST will increase the number of services, which will mainly take commuters from end-to-end with limited halts, from October. They want to upgrade the two depots acting as interchange for all routes.
“We may increase the number of routes and services from October and this will require good depots,” said another BEST official. As per the rough plans, BEST wants to revamp the depot area, which will allow better movement of buses.
“We want to modify the depots in a way that buses entering and exiting the depots will have separate points. A single platform might be created for commuters in the middle, allowing them to board and alight buses without much difficulty,” said BEST General Manager O.P. Gupta.
They will change the building area, its canteen, restrooms for drivers and conductors and other passenger amenities.
In March, the BEST had called for redevelopment of Mahim depot. But it went into problems after the selected developer decided to handover the project for Rs 50 crore, which was opposed by the BEST committee. “We will decide a fresh plan for its redevelopment,” added Gupta.
