Chandrakant Ahire, who works as a driver in a private firm in the city, is a resident of Bilalpada, Nallasopara (East). He lived with his wife Sanchita, 25, and daughter Vaishnavi, 2.

Police said Chandrakant used to work odd hours and suspected that in his absence his wife was having an extra-marital affair. This led to frequent quarrels between the couple.

S Koregaonkar, senior inspector of Nallasopara police station, said, “We have learnt that the couple fought frequently. We have also learnt that he used to assault his wife.”

On Thursday, residents who were passing by Chandrakant’s residence saw blood under the main door of the small shanty and informed others. When neighbours went to check on the family, Chandrakant allegedly came to the door carrying one of the heads. The neighbours informed the police. The police team had to break open the door to the house and take Chandrakant into custody. “We are waiting for medical reports to ascertain whether he was drunk,” Koregaonkar said.

The police learnt that the couple had quarrelled the previous night and again in the morning. In a fit of rage, Chandrakant cut off his wife’s head and then went for his daughter. “We have booked him on charges of murder,” Koregaonkar said.
