A resident of Devipada in Borivli, Mangesh Bharmarkar, allegedly committed suicide on Saturday by setting himself ablaze at the Worli residence of his maternal uncle.

The police said Bharmarkar’s mother used to taunt at him for being jobless. Unable to put up with this, he ended his life.

Two days ago, Bharmarkar left his home in Borivli after a usual domestic squabble with his mother and stayed at his uncle’s home at room number 20 in Worli’s BDD Chawl.

“Around 4 pm, when Bharmarkar was alone at the house, he poured kerosene and set himself on fire,” said Bharat Worlikar, senior inspector of Worli police station.

Neighbours who saw flames emanating from the house broke open the door and summoned the fire brigade and police.

Bharmarkar was taken to KEM Hospital in Parel where he was declared dead.A case of accidental death has been registered. No suicide note has been found.

Bharmarkar, whose father died five years ago, is survived by his mother and brother.
